For nearly two decades, Dee Dee Simon spent her days working as a registered nurse at San Quentin, caring for people in one of California’s most famous prisons. But behind her demanding career was another dream that never disappeared: singing on a major stage.
When Dee Dee finally auditioned for America’s Got Talent in 2024, she was ready to show everyone what had been hidden behind her nursing uniform.
She chose the Dreamgirls powerhouse “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” one of the most demanding songs a vocalist can attempt. Dee Dee threw everything into the performance—at one point literally kicking off her shoes as her huge voice filled the theater.
The reaction was immediate. All four judges stood for her, Heidi Klum called her one of the best singers of the season, and Simon Cowell praised her for tackling an incredibly difficult song and delivering. She received four yeses and moved forward.
But Dee Dee’s story was only beginning.
During the quarterfinals, she returned with Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control.” Her performance was so powerful that Heidi Klum hit the Golden Buzzer, sending Dee Dee directly into the Season 19 finale.
The longtime San Quentin nurse had officially become an AGT finalist.
