When Sheyi Omatayo stepped onto The X Factor UK stage in 2012, he faced a challenge that would make even experienced singers nervous.
He had chosen to perform “What a Wonderful World,” the timeless classic made famous by Louis Armstrong.
It was a bold choice. Armstrong’s unmistakable voice had made the song legendary, and any singer attempting it would inevitably face comparisons.
But Sheyi was determined to make the performance his own.
As he began singing, his deep, soulful tone brought a distinctive character to the familiar melody. Rather than relying on flashy tricks or dramatic vocal runs, he let the warmth and texture of his voice take center stage.
The contrast between the familiar song and Sheyi’s individual delivery made the audition stand out.
There was something captivating about hearing such an iconic piece performed by a new voice, especially one with an old-school quality that suited the music so naturally.
For Sheyi, the audition was an opportunity to introduce himself to a much bigger audience and show what he could bring to a classic.
And it was a reminder that a memorable talent-show performance doesn’t always need enormous high notes or elaborate staging.
Sometimes all it takes is a recognizable song, a distinctive voice and the courage to make it your own.
