She Was Told She Was Too Old to Be a Star… Then Simon Called It One of the Best Auditions He’d Ever Heard

At 42 years old, Stacy Francis arrived at The X Factor USA carrying years of self-doubt—and wondering whether she had waited too long to pursue the dream she had never been able to forget.

A single mother of two, Stacy explained that singing had become something she often did late at night after her children went to sleep. She had also spent years believing she might simply be too old to make it in the music industry.

But she wasn’t ready to let the dream disappear.

Standing in front of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, L.A. Reid and Cheryl Cole, an emotional Stacy explained how a difficult past relationship had damaged her confidence. She wanted one more opportunity to prove—to herself as much as anyone else—that her voice deserved to be heard.

Then she began singing “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

The transformation was immediate.

Stacy unleashed a huge, soulful voice packed with emotion, and by the end of the performance, all four judges were on their feet. Stacy could barely hold back her tears as the audience erupted around her.

Simon was especially impressed, telling Stacy it was one of the best auditions he had ever heard.

She received four yeses and continued in the competition, eventually reaching the live shows.

For Stacy, however, that first audition represented something even bigger: after years of wondering whether her chance had passed, she finally proved that sometimes it’s never too late to start believing in yourself again.
