When 32-year-old Brian Gilligan stepped onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage in 2019, he wasn’t a complete stranger to performing. The Dublin singer had previously appeared in the West End production of The Commitments—something judge David Walliams even recognized him from.
But behind his audition was a heartbreaking story.
A year earlier, Brian’s older brother Dave had suddenly died from a heart attack. The loss hit Brian incredibly hard, destroying much of his confidence and making him question whether he wanted to continue performing at all. For a time, he considered walking away from music.
Eventually, Brian decided to give his dream another chance. For his BGT audition, he chose “I’ll Never Love Again” from A Star Is Born—a song that carried enormous emotional weight considering everything he had been through.
From the opening notes, the theater fell silent. Brian’s delicate beginning gradually grew into a powerful, deeply emotional performance. By the time he finished, he was fighting back tears and received a standing ovation.
The judges were equally moved. David praised the passion and intensity in his voice, while Alesha Dixon said Brian had drawn everyone into the performance. Simon Cowell believed he couldn’t have chosen a more fitting song. Brian received four yeses and eventually advanced to the semifinals.
For Brian, the audition was about much more than progressing in a competition. After almost giving up music entirely, he had finally found the courage to stand onstage and sing again.
