When 14-year-old Dominic Smith stepped onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage during the show’s very first series, his confidence immediately caught the judges’ attention. Asked whether he thought he could win the competition, the Birmingham teenager confidently replied that he could have a “good whack at it.”
Then it was time to prove it.
Dominic chose “Unchained Melody” by The Righteous Brothers, a huge song for any vocalist—let alone someone only 14 years old. But once he started singing, his mature voice quickly changed the atmosphere in the room.
His powerful delivery impressed the judges, with Piers Morgan joking that Dominic had restored his faith in Birmingham. Simon Cowell was even more straightforward, telling the teenager that he thought he was “amazing.”
Dominic earned his place in the semifinals, where he returned with “I’ll Be There.” He finished among the top three in the public vote but narrowly lost the judges’ decision to ventriloquist Damon Scott, despite Simon voting to keep Dominic in the competition.
Although his BGT journey ended there, Dominic had already created one of the memorable young-singer moments from the show’s first season. At just 14, he walked onto one of Britain’s biggest stages and showed that his voice was far beyond his years.
