Rapper Mir Money, 7, was more self-assured than people three times his age when he took the stage on America’s Got Talent. Before he had even dropped a bar, he won over the crowd by telling the judges that he wanted to win so he could “take care of my family.” Despite his diminutive size, he had a huge personality.
When the music started, the little rapper went all out, leaping across the stage and rapping with a childlike swagger and attitude. The judges weren’t quite persuaded, despite the audience’s applause and encouragement. The dreaded red X appeared in front of Howard Stern halfway through the performance, and then the panel began to buzz again.
The moment that everyone recalls occurred at that point. Mir Money’s courageous face broke and he began to cry as Howard attempted to calmly explain why he had hit his buzzer. Howard’s look shifted from one of criticism to one of heartbreak when the audience turned on the judges and began to boo loudly. He approached the boy on stage, crouched next to him, gave him a hug, and called him “terrific” and “so brave.” He even said, “This job is too rough for me… I don’t want to make kids cry.”
Mir Money ultimately lost the competition, but his audition turned became one of the most talked-about events of the season—not because he failed, but rather because of the bravery required for a 7-year-old to pursue a dream in front of millions of people.
