The pressure couldn’t have been much higher when 16-year-old Olivia Garcia walked onto The X Factor UK stage for the dreaded Six Chair Challenge in 2016. She was the last girl to perform, and every one of Simon Cowell’s six chairs was already occupied. To continue in the competition, Olivia wouldn’t simply have to impress Simon—she would have to convince him to send another singer home.
Olivia was visibly overwhelmed by the situation. Her voice cracked as she spoke before the performance, and Simon even pointed out to the other judges just how nervous she looked. But everything changed once the music started.
Performing “Changing” by Sigma featuring Paloma Faith, Olivia quickly pushed through her nerves and delivered a powerful vocal performance. The audience erupted, and the judges’ reactions showed just how dramatically the teenager had transformed once she began singing.
Louis Walsh described her performance as flawless, while Sharon Osbourne and Nicole Scherzinger were also impressed. Simon was left with the decision he had been dreading: all his chairs were occupied, but Olivia had done enough to deserve one. He ultimately gave her a seat, meaning another contestant had to leave.
Olivia survived the Six Chair Challenge and became one of Simon’s final six girls heading into Judges’ Houses. What began with a terrified teenager facing seemingly impossible odds ended with one of the most dramatic performances of the round.
