Luke Islam, then 12 years old, understood precisely what he wanted when he entered the America’s Got Talent stage in 2019: to be a Broadway star. The young New York singer told the judges how much he loved musical theater and that one of his greatest inspirations was Judge Julianne Hough.
It was then time to demonstrate his abilities to everyone.
Luke choose the difficult song “She Used to Be Mine” from the Broadway production Waitress, which calls for both vocal strength and sincere passion. Luke gave a self-assured and sincere performance that soon had the audience applauding despite his youth.
The judges were totally taken aback by his strong vocals as the song progressed. The auditorium was on its feet by the last note, and Luke was clearly taken aback by the response.
However, Julianne Hough was in for an even greater surprise. She went across the judges’ table and hit the Golden Buzzer, covering the stage in golden confetti and sending Luke straight to the live performances since she was so pleased by his skill and his aspirations for Broadway.
It was an unforgettable moment and the start of an incredible adventure on America’s Got Talent for a 12-year-old who dreamed of playing on Broadway.
