She’s Only 10… Then Her Metal Cover Leaves in Total Shock

Maya Neelakantan didn’t appear to be someone ready to melt faces with a guitar when she took the stage on America’s Got Talent in 2024. At the time of her audition, the young guitarist from Chennai, India, was just ten years old. Her traditional Carnatic-style entrance left everyone in the room wondering where the performance was headed.

Then everything changed. Maya turned the AGT stage into a full-fledged metal moment by launching into Papa Roach’s “Last Resort.” The contrast was striking: strong chords, quickness, and complete confidence one moment, delicate and traditional the next. Simon Cowell even referred to her as a “rock goddess,” and the judges were clearly in disbelief.

Her inherent ability to perform a task that seemed unattainable for her age was what made the audition so memorable. This was more than just a “cute kid with talent” moment; it was a performance powerful enough to go viral, with actual musicianship and a commanding stage presence. The video swiftly went viral online after AGT coverage called it one of the season’s most memorable auditions.

Maya appeared little and quiet as she entered the stage. The 10-year-old guitarist who stopped an entire theater and millions of people online stared at her as she left.
