Some auditions don’t rely on big notes or flashy performances. Instead, they capture everyone’s attention with pure emotion. That’s exactly what happened when 23-year-old maths teacher John Adams stepped onto The X Factor stage and revealed he dreamed of trading the classroom for a career in music.
For his audition, John chose Damien Rice’s “Cannonball,” a song known for its delicate emotion and haunting melody. From the very first note, his warm, heartfelt voice filled the room, creating an intimate atmosphere that silenced the audience. Rather than trying to overpower the song, John let its emotion shine through, delivering a performance that felt honest and deeply personal.
The judges were captivated. Gary Barlow, who called “Cannonball” one of his favorite songs, praised John for doing it justice, saying he had “absolutely nailed” the vocal. Kelly Rowland said she could happily listen to an entire album of his voice, while the audience rewarded him with a standing ovation. It was one of the standout auditions of the season and earned John four enthusiastic yeses.
Although his X Factor journey ended before the live shows, John’s audition continues to be remembered by fans as one of the show’s most touching acoustic performances. He later pursued music full-time, releasing original songs and performing across the UK.
