When Kieran Rhodes stepped onto the America’s Got Talent stage, he looked like a nervous college student hoping for one big chance. The 20-year-old Berklee College of Music student started his audition at the piano with Billy Joel’s “She’s Got a Way.”
But only a short way into the song, Simon Cowell stopped him.
For a moment, it looked like the audition might fall apart. Then Simon asked if Kieran had an original song. Kieran took the risk and performed “Disengage,” a deeply personal song he wrote during a difficult period in his life.
That decision changed everything. His voice, piano playing, and raw emotion filled the room, turning a tense interruption into the best thing that could have happened. The judges were clearly moved, and Howie Mandel even told him, “You are a star, young man.”
Kieran walked on with a cover song. He walked off with four yeses — and proved that sometimes your own story is the most powerful song you can sing.
