When Sian Pattison stepped onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage in 2017, the 31-year-old mother was taking a huge step outside her comfort zone.
Sian explained that she normally sang at home and had been encouraged to audition by her young daughter. She was visibly nervous standing in front of Simon Cowell and the other judges, but she was determined to give it a try.
She began her audition with “Ave Maria.”
Her voice was clearly strong, but Simon wasn’t convinced the song was allowing Sian to show the judges who she really was. Before she could finish, he stopped the performance.
For many contestants, that moment would be terrifying.
But Simon wasn’t sending her home. Instead, he asked whether she had another song.
Sian switched to “With You” from the musical Ghost—and almost immediately, the atmosphere changed. The second song allowed much more emotion and personality to come through in her voice.
As she continued, the nervous singer who had walked onto the stage seemed to disappear. Her confidence grew, and the performance became increasingly powerful.
By the end, Sian had won over the room and received a huge response from the audience and judges.
What initially looked like an audition going wrong became exactly the opposite. Sometimes being stopped by Simon Cowell isn’t the end of an audition—it can be the moment that finally allows a contestant to show what they’re capable of.
