For years, Olivia Calderon had a dream of becoming a professional singer. She even earned degrees in both vocal performance and criminal justice—but life eventually took her in a very different direction.
By the time Olivia appeared on America’s Got Talent in 2019, the 47-year-old was working as a detention officer in Tempe, Arizona. Singing had remained an important part of her life, helping her escape the stress of a demanding job.
But there was another reason her musical ambitions had been delayed.
Olivia explained that she had put her dream on hold to help care for her father. He later passed away, and when she finally stepped onto the AGT stage, the opportunity carried enormous emotional significance.
For her audition, Olivia chose “A Mi Manera,” the Spanish-language version of “My Way.”
Her powerful, dramatic performance quickly captured the audience’s attention, building toward a huge finish that earned an enthusiastic response.
The judges weren’t completely unanimous. Howie Mandel admitted that her musical style wasn’t for him. Simon Cowell, however, loved the drama Olivia brought to the stage, while Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough also supported her.
With three yeses, Olivia advanced to the next round.
After spending years putting family and responsibility ahead of her own ambitions, she finally had the chance to stand on one of television’s biggest stages and chase the dream she had never completely abandoned.
