Chrisyius Whitehead, age five, appeared more suited for kindergarten than the spotlight when he walked onto the America’s Got Talent 2024 stage. Little legs hanging off the drum stool, tiny headphones—the audience “awww’d,” the judges grinned, and everyone obviously anticipated something adorable rather than exceptional.
He then grabbed the sticks.
Chrisyius immediately fell into the groove like a seasoned pro as soon as the backup track began. He attacked the equipment with a confidence well beyond his years, and his timing was impeccable. What began as a straightforward rhythm swiftly evolved into a full-fledged drum demonstration complete with perfectly timed rolls, crashes, and fast-paced kicks. He was later referred to as a “drumming savant” in reaction videos, and it’s difficult to dispute that.
The judges’ expressions changed from courteous smiles to wide-eyed incredulity as his solo developed. Midway through the performance, the crowd began to applaud, with some even getting up while he was still performing. The entire theater was on its feet by the last cymbal hit. As the judges complimented Chrisyius’s skill, rhythm, and fearless stage presence, he shyly smiled. This wasn’t just “good for a 5-year-old,” this was good, period.
He continued to walk like a child who required assistance getting up on the stool.
He left the AGT stage as the smallest rock star, serving as a reminder that sometimes the smallest drummer can produce the greatest sound.
