In 2019, Mark McMullan entered the Britain’s Got Talent stage for a very personal reason rather than just to win over the judges. Before beginning to sing, Mark revealed that his older brother had been incarcerated inside his own body for years and was only able to hear due to locked-in syndrome. The atmosphere in the room was immediately altered when Mark revealed that music had become a great source of comfort for him.
Mark selected the emotionally charged song “Bring Him Home” from Les Misérables for his audition. The theater was silent from the opening note. You could sense that every word had a genuine meaning because of his voice’s purity, control, and anguish and love. The crowd became obviously emotional as the performance progressed, and by the last lines, everyone in the room was fully engaged.
The response was enormous when he was done. He received four yes votes from the judges and a standing ovation from the majority of the audience. David Walliams told him he had made his brother proud. It was more than simply a powerful vocal performance; it was one of those infrequent auditions where the song and the narrative came together in a way that affected everyone in attendance.
