Heartbroken Pizza Girl Belts Ariana Grande… and Makes the X Factor Judge Blush

When 21-year-old Katie Coleman from Darlington stepped onto The X Factor UK stage, she didn’t hide why she was there — she’d been badly heartbroken by an ex, and music was how she was trying to move on. The big question was whether she could turn all that emotion into a performance strong enough to impress the judges.

Her song choice said it all: “Break Free” by Ariana Grande — an anthem about walking away and finding your strength again. From the moment she launched into the first verse, it was clear this wasn’t just karaoke. Katie’s voice was powerful, fiery and full of attitude, hitting the big notes while still sounding like she meant every single word. The audience quickly got on her side, clapping and cheering as her confidence grew.

One judge in particular, radio host Nick “Grimmy” Grimshaw, looked completely smitten — the official channel even teased that Katie “made Grimmy’s heart feel funny.” By the end of the audition, the panel were smiling, the crowd was loud, and Katie had done exactly what she came to do: turn heartbreak into a breakout moment and walk away with a set of yeses and a fresh start.
