I was sitting in a café when I noticed the woman at the table next to me. She looked very pregnant—and she was already on her third cup of coffee. I kept glancing over, telling myself to mind my own business, but the more I watched, the more I felt my irritation building.
Finally, I couldn’t hold it in anymore.
I blurted out, “Think about your baby!”
She snapped her head toward me, absolutely furious, and shot back, “Are you an idiot? I’m not pregnant—I’m just wearing an oversized jacket!”
My face went hot instantly. I felt like the entire café could hear my soul leaving my body. I stammered out a shaky apology, turned back to my drink, and stared at the table like it might swallow me whole.
I’ve never wanted to disappear so fast in my life.
