A 42-year-old doorman named Neil Fullard admitted he had never sang in front of an audience when he took the stage on Britain’s Got Talent (BGT). His strong voice had been confined to his home, the shower, and the car for more than two decades. Although they knew he enjoyed singing, his friends and fellow doormen who came to cheer him on had never seen him perform live. In contrast to his hard night job, which he sought only to “put bread and butter on the table,” Neil’s main reason for going to auditions was the desire to make a career from music.
When asked what song he would be performing, Neil said “Come Fly With Me” by Frank Sinatra, a classic. His anxious manner vanished as soon as the music began, and he gave a performance that totally changed the atmosphere of the space. Neil’s voice is rich and refined, making it ideal for the Rat Pack sound. The audience was enthralled by his seamless performance, which was accompanied by an innate charisma, and they soon stood up, applauding and applauding the unexpected star. It was a slick, professional, and energetic performance.
As Simon Cowell admitted that he “did not expect it to be this good,” the judges were in complete disbelief. Amanda Holden called Neil “sexy” and “charming,” while Piers Morgan called his singing voice “one of the best” he had ever heard. The jury concluded that Neil needed a big band and a tuxedo since he lacked the stage presence and confidence to go along with his exceptional voice. Three passionate “yeses” were given to Neil, putting him one step closer to appearing at the Royal Variety Show and—more importantly—to quitting his job as a doorman to pursue a singing career.
