Glasgow native Vinnie McKee, 29, made his introduction to the Britain’s Got Talent judges. His modest upbringing stood in stark contrast to the enormous stage. Vinnie has been a holiday park entertainment for eleven years, doing everything from presenting game shows and calling bingo to performing for small crowds. After years of singing to a small group of tables, he acknowledged that it was “mad” and a huge step forward for his career to perform in front of the crowded arena. Even though he was anxious, Vinnie was committed to proving to the judges and the country that a park performer could advance to the most prestigious talent competition.
Vinnie decided to perform a stirring and surprising cover of The Proclaimers’ timeless hit song, “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles),” at his audition. His performance was really amazing. The entire theater was immediately enthralled by Vinnie’s sincere, strong performance and amazing vocal range. He gave the well-known song his whole heart, showcasing a huge voice that the judges had obviously not expected. As Vinnie played the last stirring note, the audience stood up, utterly enthralled.
The performance was so good that it left the judges “speechless.”
Alesha Dixon observed that throughout the song, Vinnie seemed to be sincerely trying to establish himself. Particularly perplexed, Simon Cowell asked him directly if he had received any formal training. Vinnie responded that he had just “always sang” since he was a small child. Simon Cowell made a bold choice after realizing he had a truly undiscovered and amazing ability. In a shower of gold confetti, he stretched out and hit the Golden Buzzer, securing one of the season’s most surprising triumphs and sending Vinnie McKee directly to the semi-finals.
