A 76-year-old man participates in a piano battle at the mall

Brendan Kavanagh, sometimes known as “Dr. K,” is an Irish modern British pianist and piano teacher who has over 1.5 million YouTube subscribers.

He performs and promotes boogie-woogie, which is almost always improvisational and often combines aspects of traditional Irish music with jazz, blues, rock, and roll. He regularly performs at pianos in public places, sometimes in four hands with friends or bystanders.

He also plays the accordion, specializing in traditional Irish music. Dr. K Media Limited, a multi-platform interactive piano training business with a strong focus on boogie-woogie music, was founded in 2007 by Brendan Kavanaugh. Since then, online piano instruction, sales, performances, and promotion have become the company’s primary focus.

Presently performing covertly as Dr. K at public pianos in train stations, airports, and other open public areas, particularly in London, usually wearing his trademark dark hoodie and black eyewear, but also sometimes dressed as a worker, police officer, or security guard.

He occasionally plays practical pranks on passersby or pianists by posing as an amateur, inquiring about the location of the middle C on the keyboard, attempting to play a few notes awkwardly, and then skillfully improvising to produce a humorous effect.

He asked, “Do you know boogie-woogie?” instead of, “What’s your name?” which led to the creation of an odd meme.
